Julian Gerstin Sextet

Julian Gerstin is a percussionist, composer, and ethnomusicologist whose music bridges jazz with global traditions. His artistry draws on deep collaborations with musicians from Cuba, Martinique, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Bulgaria, and Egypt, blending Afro Caribbean rhythms, Balkan textures, and jazz improvisation into a voice that is uniquely his own.

As the leader of the Julian Gerstin Sextet, he’s crafted original works that celebrate rhythmic vitality and melodic exploration, all while staying rooted in the communities and histories that inspire him. His contributions extend beyond performance—Julian co authored The Musician’s Guide to Rhythm and has taught widely, guiding others in the power of rhythm and improvisation.

In 2025, Julian and his sextet will release their highly anticipated new record, Songbirds of the Deep Sea, on the TRR label. The album promises richly layered soundscapes that push his creative vision even further, carrying forward his mission of honoring tradition while opening new possibilities for jazz.
