Julian Gerstin Sextet, ‘Songbirds of the Deep Sea’ on Undiscovered Music!

By Undiscovered Music

Jazz-Caribbean-Arabic-Balkan original music. Highly rhythmic, highly melodic, audience-friendly jazz. We’re based in Brattleboro, have been around about 10 years, have released two CDs and are in the process of mixing the third. The musicians include Anna Patton, clarinetist extraordinaire; Eugene Uman, piano, Director of the Vermont Jazz Center; Don Anderson, creative trumpeter; Wes Brown, bass treasure; Ben James, drum set; and Julian Gerstin on percussion/composition. This concert celebrates the band’s new release, “Songbirds of the Deep Sea.” The music ranges from the raucous Caribbean fun of “Rosemary and the Taxi Driver” to the echoing percussion of “Talking Forest;” from “Rocks and Dreams,” built on a classical Arabic song form, to the jazz funk of “Get Along.” The title track imagines an undersea voyage, beautiful strange creatures you glimpse as they pass your window, luminescence in the distance—the elusive vibrations of music itself.
